The innovative master in management and design for architects is the world’s first postgraduate program to combine creativity and management – it now adds a third angle: technology!

IE University is using Toshiba’s Folio 100 to develop Spain’s first tablet-based academic program. The tablets play an integral role in the University’s Master in Architectural Management and Design (MAMD) program run by IE School of Architecture, with a student body comprised of ten nationalities. All students on the program have a Toshiba Folio100 which they use to communicate with their professors and among themselves, as well as to access practical cases and notes, and to work with different multimedia applications.
Toshiba’s Folio 100 is the only educational platform the student needs for this postgraduate master program, which means there is no need for traditional note-taking. All materials pertaining to the courses that make up the program can be kept on just one learning device.
At the start of the program each student received a Folio 100, using it from the outset to read practical case studies and recommended books, as well as to access the University’s online campus. They will also be using the device to follow video conferences and maintain constant lines of communication with professors and classmates during the online periods of the program. Read more…

The Power of the Word

Written on December 9, 2010 by Dirk Hopfl in Academics, IE University

Words are human, substantially human. They link our thoughts to reality and to other thoughts. Thanks to words, others know what we are thinking or what we want to say. Depending on how skilful we are with words, we succeed or fail in reaching others, obtaining personal or collective benefits, and building the future.

No matter how knowledgeable they are, no matter how intelligent they are, people who do not express themselves very well are at a disadvantage. Words are effectiveness.

Our thoughts are made up of words. As we progress in the art of the word, we learn to think better, we acquire mental skills that we did not have previously because the brain develops with language, and if we train and teach the word, the brain increases its muscle power.

Our brain deals with images, sensations, all kinds of memories and an endless array of words. Our language brings all that together. The word and the action are what best reveal what we are and what we want to be. People who do not use words well act as if they have had their strongest member amputated. Read more…

Rock ‘n’ Roll Architecture

Written on November 15, 2010 by Dirk Hopfl in IE University

It happened in the IE Bachelor in Architecture, subject: Design Studio II…

Professor Manuel Ocaña, http://www.manuelocana.com/ invited architect and researcher Carlos Ramos to one of his lectures. Carlos’ conference was entitled out Towards Rocking Architecture. – A retrospective insight into space and sound throughout four short stories.- and talked about the influences rock music could have on architecture. As well as speaking about the subject – Carlos  also took out his guitar and played some chords like the well known “Smoke on the water” from Deep Purple in the videoconference.

Not only was Professor Manuel Ocaña amazed by this new learning experience, but students also commented: “This was really a fantastic conference and a very out of the box learning experience.”

Trivia Challenge – Play with IE University!

Written on September 8, 2010 by Dirk Hopfl in IE University

IE University has created a Facebook application called “Trivia Challenge” , to enable internet users to gauge their knowledge about biology, architecture, communication, law, art history, psychology and tourism. The aim is to provide a fun way for young people, for whom new technologies and internet are a way of life, to get to know more about the different subjects taught at the IE University campus.

The application presents users with a challenge: it poses trivia-style questions that are divided into four levels, each of which represents a year of university studies. Each level comprises eight questions related to the different degrees at IE University. The aim of the game is to answer as many questions as possible correctly to get a score that will get you onto the “most knowledgeable” list.

IE University is firmly committed to the new environment based on social networks and the application of technologies to education. It sees social networks as a powerful tool for connecting with students, which is why you can find IE University on all key networking sites, including Youtube, Tuenti, Facebook, Myspace and Flickr.

IE University also recently launched a mobile site that permits thousands of mobile users to access the internet and interact through its portal at http://ie.yoc.com, where people can find information on the University, its bachelor programs, social networks and a strategy game.

How do you know a Law degree is for you?

Written on January 3, 2010 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News

Soledad Atienza, the director of the Bachelor of Laws, talks about the future for lawyers, and what it takes to follow your passion. “Nowadays lawyers need more than just legal training to become successful lawyers.  They need to be business oriented, they need to be trained in management, they need to be innovative and they need to be international.”

What made you realize that Law was what you wanted to study?

I was looking for a program that would open my mind to the professional world, not just to the legal field, but also the business and political world; a program that would help me understand the way the world is run and how companies, governments and people interact.  My law degree has given me the perfect frame to work in different professions, always being able to apply the legal knowledge and skills I have acquired studying law.

What advice can you give to someone who is considering studying a degree in Law?

If you want to become a lawyer, you should know that the legal profession is a hard one; if you practice as a lawyer you will have a lot of responsibility and you will work long hours.  But in return it will give you independence and an intellectual profession– Independence because you will have to make decisions concerning your clients based on your own analysis of the situation and recommending what you consider is best for your client or telling them what is right and what is wrong. And it is intellectual because this profession is about studying and thinking.

This is a degree that will open doors to the professional world.  You will be trained to practice the law but you will be ready to do nearly anything you want in the business and political world.  Read more…
