Are you a quant?
Written on March 24, 2012 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News
Prof. Paris de l’Etraz’s masterclass, held in Tokyo on Febuary 19th, brought a big crowd of attendees drawn by the topic: ‘Think like an entrepreneur’.
Drawing on both his long and illustrious work experience, as well as his decision to take on the challenge of starting his own company, Prof. de l’Etraz explained what makes an entrepreneur and what he/she needs to do to succeed. Prof. de l’Etraz spent over 20 years in investment banking and venture capital, mainly at UBS Bank and ABN AMRO. Since 2005, he has continued to be in the business of either raising funds, setting up new companies, selling or buying companies through his group Amazing Lab.
However, his description of ‘quants’ (mathematically minded individuals who exhibit a closed mentality and cannot deal with ambiguity at work) really brought the room alive, many participants recognizing themselves in his description, and others wondering if they are, in fact, quants as well.
Prof. de l’Etraz explained that in our rapidly changing world, higher levels of certainty cannot be created by generating more information, being obsessed with objectivity and the sacredness of numbers. It’s in fact open-mindedness that is critical to face uncertainty and understanding the complexity of globalization and new business models in order to create sustainable corporations in the long-term.
The Q&A session after the masterclass was particularly lively, and conversations about being a quant, and how an IE education can help to overcome one’s ‘quantness’ flowed over drinks.
If you missed his engaging presentation, you can review his latest TEDx presentation on the same topic here.

For the 33rd time, IE Business School welcomed a new blend of young entrepreneurs, innovators and future leaders to become part of its family and shared values. Goals are set high, and visions are sky-scraping.
In an inspiring setting, the beautiful converted monastery of the IE University Campus in Segovia, the students were greeted with speeches from Santiago Iñiguez, the President of IE University and Dean of IE Business School, David Bach, the Dean of Programs, and Pilar Vicente, the Associate Director of Admissions, Full-time Programs, among many others.

IE creates business incubator for its undergraduate students
Written on March 22, 2012 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News
From May 1, 2012 IE University will set up a international incubator for innovative businesses for and from its undergraduate students. A substantial number of students from countries worldwide have already identified international business opportunities and the laboratory will serve to strengthen their projects, as well as opening them up toSegovia’s business community. There are currently ten companies created by IE University students, at different stages of development.
Students will undertake internships in the laboratory under the tutorship of their professors, who will guide them throughout the entire process, while top-tier business experts provide assessment in areas like marketing, funding, strategy and legal aspects. A group of students will work on their business projects during the spring, and another group will then take over and work on their initiatives for the rest of the year.
Work will include the preparation of external consulting projects for companies like HRT F1 Team (the Spanish Fórmula 1 motor racing team), INDRA, Fundación Atlético de Madrid, One to One, the Spanish Olympic Committee, and Prysma. These firms and institutions have signed up to have IE University students carry out consulting projects or draft reports, affording students the opportunity to get hand-on experience of real business projects. Students who take part in the initiative will attend practical workshops throughout the year led by executives from participating organizations, in addition to having their projects assessed by professors and tutors. The aim is to equip students with the skills needed to meet the challenges they will face in their future careers.
The business incubator will be located in Segovia’s Casa de la Moneda (Royal Mint), a cultural heritage building considered the oldest example of industrial architecture of its kind in Europe. The Casa de la Moneda was founded by Felipe II and built by Juan de Herrera between 1583 and 1588.

Facebook – more questions than answers
Written on March 15, 2012 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News
IE Focus | By Dr. Ricardo Perez, Professor at IE Business School
Facebook’s decision to float the company on the stock market has revealed the true figures of this internet giant, and has left quite a few questions unanswered, particularly where advertising is concerned. At last we have some real information rather than just rumors about Facebook’s business figures. Allow me to put things into context with some of the key data. In 2011, $3,200 million in revenues and $1,000 profit. Many analysts expected to see figures over 4,000 million and say they are surprised. Some say that facebook’s revenues have not grown as fast as they should (over 80%), while others complain that net margins are also going down (still at 25%). However all have a positive opinion about the almost 4,000 million that the company has to invest in order to keep growing.
But after examining all these figures there are more questions than answers about Facebook’s future. Let’s take a look at these questions and the challenges they pose for the firm.
How scalable is the advertising business as it stands today? Growth in the advertising sector has decelerated. Adverts that appear on the right-hand side of the screen (I have just counted seven on my personal page) are not relevant in the majority of cases. Hence they are of little value from the point of view of the advertiser. In spite of the fact that they changed their policy at the end of last year, attempting to raise prices and quality, they did not get the desired results. The challenge lies in finding a better formula for using the information available to customers and convert it into a more focused form of advertising. Read more…
