IE partners with MIT Sloan for Dual Degree

Written on October 31, 2011 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News

The IE – MIT Sloan Dual Degree is the result of a successful partnership between IE Business School and MIT Sloan where students can earn both an MBA from IE Business School and a Master of Science in Management Studies from MIT Sloan in a period of 19 months.

The MSMS Program is intended for MBA students from non-US business schools allowing them to personalize their learning experience and deepen their knowledge in a particular area of management. Students take courses with MIT Sloan students and work closely with an MIT faculty member to write a master’s thesis. Students can then integrate their previous career experiences and academic knowledge to leverage their thesis to differentiate themselves in the job market.

IE University ranked no. 45 worldwide by IHT

Written on October 28, 2011 by Dirk Hopfl in IE University

IE University holds the No. 45 position worldwide and No. 21 in Europe in a survey conducted by International Herald Tribune.

It is the first time that 2 Spanish universities feature among the top 50 worldwide – Universidad de Navarra (41) and IE University (45).  The ranking analyzed the opinions of 3,000 CEOs and senior managers from 1,000 companies in Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, US, Spain, France, Italy, Holland and UK, about the best 150 universities in terms of graduate employability. US universities Harvard, Stanford and Yale achieved the top positions in the ranking, which includes 23 universities in North America, 21 in Europe, and 2 in Asia. European institutions include 2 Spanish universities, Universidad de Navarra (41st) and IE University (45th).

International Herald Tribune drew up the ranking in collaboration with consulting companies Emerging (France) and Trendence (Germany), with the aim of evaluating opinions held by senior managers, who were asked to allocate scores to universities in their country, continent, and other world regions. The main findings of the survey include the fact that recruiters prefer to contract graduates from universities that have close ties with the corporate world, where students accumulate professional experience during their university career. Hence this international ranking serves to identify the best centers of learning in terms of subsequent employment opportunities.

“The fact that our university model is recognized by recruiters worldwide is a source of great satisfaction,” says Salvador Carmona, Rector of IE University. “IE University enjoys close links with the corporate world, and this report clearly states that the connection between universities and businesses is playing an increasingly important role”.

On October 17 and 18 IE University hosted the International Conference on Reinventing Higher Education, organized jointly with The Chronicle of Higher Education. The conference brought together the presidents and rectors of US, European, Asian and Arab universities to examine key issues that included the challenge of ensuring employability among university graduates, currently a hot topic among international media, as evidenced by articles like this in the International Herald Tribune.

IE’s EMBA ranks 8 worldwide by FT

Written on October 24, 2011 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News

IE Business School has been ranked No. 8 in the world in Executive MBA programs by Financial Times.

The ranking considers IE’s Executive MBA one of the best in the world based on criteria that include graduates’ subsequent professional development, fulfilment of participants’ expectations, and salary increases. The result further consolidates IE’s position as a leading international business school for senior management training programs.

In this year’s edition, the FT ranking based its evaluations on 16 indicators of quality in Executive MBA programs at 100 business schools worldwide, including graduates’ degree of satisfaction, career progression and increase in salary in the years following the program, and the degree to which the program came up to their expectations. School-based criteria included diversity of program faculty, the program’s international content, and the school’s level of research.

IE Business School’s Executive MBA program offers both weekly and bi-weekly versions. The program has been totally restructured this year to comprise 3 main areas: Global Context of Business, Creating & Developing Business Strategies, and Executing Business Strategies.  It places a special focus on entrepreneurial management, the role of new content in finance, a personal strategy plan, and key elements like international experiences in different locations worldwide, rounded off with a consulting project or master class project.

IE Business School Executive MBA programs come in different formats, including 100% face-to-face sessions, and a blended format, which combines onsite and online learning, available in Spanish or English. They include the International Executive MBA Bi-weekly, a presential program run in English in Madrid, and the recently launched IE Brown Executive MBA, aimed at senior executives with an international profile, which this year has students from 14 countries. The program is run jointly with Brown University, an Ivy League university renowned for excellence in the field of humanistic, social and scientific disciplines. IE’s Executive MBA portfolio also includes the Global Executive MBA, a new blended English-taught program with onsite modules in Spain, China, US and Brazil.

Where are you from?
I am from Shanghai, China.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I am an INFJ (introversion, intuition, feeling, judging) ever since high school. How can an INFJ appear in a business school?

Why did you choose the Master in International Management at IE Business School? What do you find to be the most attractive component of the program?
I chose the Master in International Management because it covers all kinds of business courses which will facilitate me to work in a multinational environment. Why IE? Top school, great location, good timing, and nice people!
Diversity is the word. The program is composed of people of 48 nationalities. I have talked with my friends in other top business schools in Europe or in the States, and I’m pretty sure none of those schools have a class profile as diverse as IE has. When I am in the classroom, I feel like being in the United Nations. Obviously, I can learn a lot from people with different cultural and academic backgrounds.

What new things have you been learning the past month?
Learning to be awake until 3am or even 7am! For those who are thinking of applying to IE, you should ask to yourselves whether you’re ready for the heavy workload, or the better term is “work hard, party hard”. Madrid is a cool place to live, but it’s a dangerous place to study. Imagine working on Financial Accounting all day along and then going to Pacha for the MIM welcome party till morning! Time management is an additional course at IE.

You have only just started the program, what is your overall impression so far?
IE might be the best fit business school for me. The students are smart, the faculty is really strong, and yet they are overall nice human-beings. IE takes pride in its emphasis on entrepreneurship and Cooperate Social Responsibility, which are key factors in today’s business success from a long-term perspective.
Ambitions? To tell the truth, I don’t know. I am open to any possibilities though I would prefer to work in my hometown Shanghai, which is a most dynamic city with increasing opportunities. The most practical ambition may be to help IE establish a high reputation in China either by building strong alumni network or by organizing more activities/events between IE and China.

IE-Brown University International Teaching Fellowship

Written on October 17, 2011 by Dirk Hopfl in IE News

IE University and Brown University invites candidates from the humanities to apply for the International Teaching Fellowship (ITF) for the academic year 2012-13. The ITF provides the opportunity to teach in Spain at IE University in Segovia, Spain as a fellow of the School of Arts and Humanities. The fellow will also be affiliated with the Cogut Center for the Humanities at Brown University. The fellowship offers the opportunity to develop and implement innovative curricula in one of Europe’s foremost professional degree-granting institutions while also providing time for research and career development.

DESCRIPTION
IE University is the undergraduate affiliate institution of IE Business School, based in Madrid. The IE International MBA is regularly ranked in the top-ten worldwide and its specialized Masters programs are recognized globally. The undergraduate program, launched in 2009, has been designed to bring the excellence of the graduate school to undergraduate teaching. IE’s undergraduate student body is extremely diverse, with no single dominant national or linguistic group.

IE University offers a unique liberal arts model of education in the heart of Europe, with an emphasis on small class sizes and student-faculty exchange. The School of Arts and Humanities is at the very heart of IE’s mission, as the courses it offers form part of all the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University.

In addition to the faculty life found within the University, fellows may also profit from IE’s connections to the wider academic environment in Madrid, including important libraries (e.g. Biblioteca Nacional), leading museums (e.g. Thyssen, Prado), Foundations (e.g. Juan March), Research Centres (e.g. CSIC), and neighbouring Universities (e.g. Universidad Complutense).

TEACHING
Fellows will join the IE claustro (faculty) to teach the equivalent of two courses in a blended seminar/lecture format.  The course curriculum should reflect the interests and strength of the fellow, as well as the pedagogical aims of IE´s undergraduate program; curricula will be developed in collaboration with the IE School of Arts and Humanities. Because of the diverse nature of IE’s degree programs, fellows will likely have the opportunity to teach either two standard, semester-length undergraduate courses, or one such class combined with short, structured courses in the graduate program. In total, the fellow will be responsible for 130 contact hours and no more than two curricula. The language of instruction is English and knowledge of Spanish is not required. More information about IE’s teaching structure as well as general information about the institution can be found on our website.
